Measurement Guide

This set of instructions is a measurement guide for the fitting of the torso and legs of the male body. These details will give our tailors all of the numbers needed to create garments that fit like no other – with comfort and style. We recommend if you are available, to be fitted in person in Nashville, but if this is impossible, please take this measurement guide to your local tailor. If you wish to take these measurements personally, please don’t hesitate to call us with any questions.

ERIC ADLER MEASUREMENT GUIDE

Please follow these instructions when your tailor is measuring for a custom, tailored JACKET.

  1. Collar: Take the measuring tape around the neck one full time. Add two fingers in between measuring tape and neck for comfort and shrinkage.
  2. Chest: Take the measuring tape, under the armpits, and with the arms relaxed by your sides, around the broadest part of the chest and back.
  3. Overarm: Take the measuring tape around the arms, maintaining the measuring tape parallel to the ground.
  4. Coat Waist: Take the measuring tape around the waist,  at the smallest or largest part of the stomach.
  5. 1/2 Girth: This measurement is taken from your favorite fitting jacket or sport coat.  Take the measuring tape from the center back seam to the front edge of the coat at the height of the fastening button. If the jacket is a 2 button it will be at the top button. If the jacket is a 3 button this measurement is taken at the height of the middle button.  If you don’t have a preferred sport coat or jacket to take measurements from, you can start at the spine in the center of the back and measure around the waist at a height that’s parallel to the ground at one inch above the belly button.
  6. Hip/Seat: Please remove all items from pockets for this measurement.  Take the measuring tape around the widest part of the hips and butt. (Note: This may or may not be where you wear your pants!)
  7. Point-to-Point: Take the measuring tape, from the tip of the left shoulder to the tip of the right shoulder, holding the tape along the top of the shoulders. (Note: This will be where the sleeve meets the shoulder.)
  8. Back: Take the measuring tape from the left side of the back laterally to the right side (basically the crease of one armpit to the crease of the other).
  9. Outsleeve: Take the measuring tape from the top of the sleeve head down to the end of the sleeve (break of the wrist or where you want your sleeve to end). If your arms are different lengths, take a measurement for each arm. Otherwise, one will do.
  10. Shoulder:  Note that this is a two-part measurement separated by a hyphen (“-”)!  Begin by taking the measuring tape from the outside of the neck (where the shoulder “begins), along the top of the shoulder, to the tip of the shoulder bone. Record this number (it is usually between 5-8, depending on the size of the person). Keep the measuring tape as it is (don’t start over for the second half) and continue to bring the measuring tape down to the break of the wrist (or end of the sleeve) along the center of the arm, away from the side of the body. This measurement may look something like 6″-30″.
  11. Waistline: Take the measuring tape from the top of the back, down the center of the back, to the top of the pant/belt. This measurement will be where you like to wear your trousers.
  12. Coat Length: Take the measuring tape from the top of the back, down the center of the back, to the desired length. A classic-length coat usually stops around the middle of the thumb (if your arms are relaxed at your sides), but today more than ever, jacket length is a personal preference.
  13. Bicep: The distance around the fullest part of your bicep at its resting position
  14. Waistband: Slide the measuring tape slightly inside the waistband and pull it taught at the waistband.

Please follow these instructions when your tailor is measuring for custom/made-to-measure TROUSERS.

  1. Outseam: Take the measuring tape from the top of the pant/belt down to where you want your pant leg to end). It is helpful to let the 1″ mark of the measuring tape go closest to the floor so you can get a more accurate measurement and prevent kneeling.
  2. Inseam: Take the measuring tape from the center of the crotch down the inside seam to the desired length.
  3. Front Rise: This measurement is the distance from the center of the crotch to the top of the front waistband of the pant.
  4. Back Rise: This measurement is the distance from the center of the crotch to the top of the back waistband of the pant.
  5. Thigh: The measurement around the thickest part of your thigh. This is normally somewhere near the top of the thigh.
  6. Knee (Skin): Take the measuring tape around your knee one time.
  7. Knee (Finished): With the pants on, measure from crease-to-crease at knee height and double this measurement.
  8. Calf: Take the measuring tape once around the fullest part of your calf muscle.
  9. Hip: Please remove all items from pockets for this measurement.  Take the measuring tape around the widest part of the hips and butt keeping the measuring tape parallel to the ground. (Note: Please let us know if you carry a thick wallet)
  10. Waist: Slide the measuring tape slightly inside the waistband and pull it taught at waistband.
  11. Bottom: With the pants on, measure the width of the pants from crease-to-crease at the end of the leg and double the measurement.

Please follow these instructions when your tailor is measuring for a custom VEST/WAISTCOAT.

  1. Vest Front Length: This measurement is taken from the shoulder seam right beside the neck down to the bottom of the pant waistband in the front, center.
  2. Vest Back Length: This measurement is taken from the neckline in the center of the back down to the bottom of the waistband in the center back.
  3. Vest Opening (V): Drape the tape around the neck to the desired position and divide the measurement by 2.

We also can take your measurements from existing clothing. If there is a particular fit or style you really love, ship us the garment, and we will use those measurements for your custom piece.
